What SUNPOW offers, and who it is for
SUNPOW started with metal detectors, and they are still the heart of what we do. Our U.S. trademark file dates the first use of the SUNPOW name on detectors to October 2013. Today the range also covers pinpointers, a digging tool, garden hose reels, an ultrasonic cleaner and pull-up bands, 17 products in all.
A detector for the first season
Most people who open a SUNPOW box are new to detecting. Some want a Saturday plan for the kids at the beach. Others have watched a few videos and want to know what lies under the local park. We plan the range around that first season. The controls are a handful of buttons, and the modes say what they do: All Metal sounds off on everything, DISC and Notch skip the trash you choose to skip, and Pinpoint narrows a target before you dig.
Simple is not the same as weak. Our adult detectors carry coils from 6 to 12 in, backlit displays and, on the rechargeable models, lithium batteries that last 20 to 35 hours between charges. The kids' models are lighter, with short stems and one to three buttons, because a child who fights a heavy detector gives up after ten minutes.

Why the coil is sealed and the box is not
Every SUNPOW search coil is sealed to IP68. Lost rings and coins end up in wet sand and shallow water, and a coil that can go into the surf opens up the whole beach. The control box is another matter. On our detectors it is not waterproof, so keep it high and dry: a soaked control box is the quickest way to end a beach day early.
The rest of the bag
A detector tells you something lies under the coil. Finding it in the hole takes longer, so the SUNPOW range also has pinpointers and a digger. Our pinpointers scan 360° around the tip and buzz and vibrate faster as they get closer. The rechargeable GD02 runs up to 15 hours on its 800 mAh battery. The 12 in digger has an inch scale etched into the blade, so you can see how deep the target sits before you reach in.
And the yard
The same habit of putting things away carries over to the garden. A hose left on the lawn kinks, cracks in the sun and trips someone in the dark. Our wall-mounted reels pull out, lock at any length and rewind when you tug, and they meet the faucet through a 3/4 in brass fitting. With lengths from 33 to 150 ft, you can match the reel to the farthest bed instead of guessing.
Where to start
If you are new, pick the place before the product. Beach hunters do best with the sealed Double D coil, park hunters with a light 8 in coil, and families with a stem that sets from child to adult height. Add a pinpointer the first time a hole gets wider than your hand.
What a detector will not do
DISC and Notch cut down on digging trash, but no setting makes a detector certain about every target. Foil and pull tabs can sound close to a gold ring, so on a clean beach many hunters dig every solid signal. A SUNPOW detector will find more than you expect and less than the videos promise. That gap is the hobby, and it is a good one.
